It took 12 weeks, five companies, and a lot of collaboration to develop Kaplan Mobile, a new app that makes academic and professional test preparation more accessible on more devices and to more users.

For Kaplan Publishing, a key player in the standardized testing arena, the goal was to make its signature test prep content for courses available to customers on the mobile devices they use most often. For starters, the new app is available for iOS systems, including the iPhone, the iPad, and the iPod touch.

"Essentially, there are five major pieces of the puzzle that we needed to put this application together successfully," says Brett Sandusky, director of product innovation at Kaplan Publishing, which is part of Kaplan, Inc. and a subsidiary of The Washington Post Co. The challenge was getting all the pieces and players properly synchronized: The MarkLogic Server provided the infrastructure for Kaplan Publishing's content, and Adobe supplied user authentication functionality for the Bluefire Productions' reader app. Then, the content needed a home on a cloud server for easy downloading once the entitlements were met.

"Although we have several customers in the academic sector al ready, this is a unique application where MarkLogic is being used to provide all of the resources for a course on a mobile device," says David Gorbet, vice president of product strategy at MarkLogic. "Agility and flexibility are the key benefits that customers see with MarkLogic." And when the Apple iTunes App Store changed its app policy midstream during the development process, that agility and flexibility kept the project moving smoothly and according to deadline. …
