SpringerReference: Ahead of the Pack

Springer Science+Business Media has stepped up the speed of publishing with the launch of SpringerReference.com, an innovative new platform designed for researchers and academic and corporate librarians. What sets SpringerReference apart from other reference databases is its ability to track and publish changes in near-real time.

Wouter van der Velde, Springer's eproduct manager of ebooks in eproduct marketing, says, "SpringerReferences offers living, changing editions of Springer's eReferences long before print editions are updated." Authors can make changes in the database to update an article, chart, or reference work at any time, he says. "So researchers and librarians actually see the most up-to-date information in any subject."

Van der Velde refers to the new platform as a "dynamic new publishing process." The e-references on SpringerReference.com complement those on SpringerLink. But while SpringerLink's e-references are static, SpringerReference.com's are constantly being updated. The process is similar to that of Wikipedia, but the content is vetted by experts in a particular scientific discipline and monitored by an editorial board. SpringerReference is designed to keep content accurate, says van der Velde.
