APHA's 2011 Award Winners to Be Celebrated: Outstanding Health Leaders to Be Recognized at Annual Meeting

APHA WILL honor the work of some of the nation's most outstanding health workers during the Association's 139th Annual Meeting this month.

More than a dozen honorees will be recognized as winners of APHA's 2011 awards at the meeting, to be held Oct. 29-Nov. 2 in Washington, D.C.

Selected for their commitment to public health, this year's recipients hail from fields, including community health, academia, health administration and public policy.

The 2011 winners of APHA's awards are:

* APHA Award for Excellence: Howard Hu, MD, MPH, ScD, National

Science Foundation International chair, Department of Environmental Health Sciences, and professor of environmental health sciences, epidemiology and internal medicine at the University of Michigan schools of public health and medicine;

* APHA Executive Director Citation: Kaye Bender, PhD, RN, FAAN, president and CEO, Public Health Accreditation Board;

* APHA Presidential Citation: Risa Lavizzo-Mourey, MD, MBA, president and CEO, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation;

* APHA Distinguished Public Health Legislator of the Year: U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky, D-Ill.;

* David P. Rall Award for Advocacy in Public Health: Michael Jacobson, PhD, executive director, Center for Science in the Public Interest;

* Helen Rodriguez-Trias Social Justice Award: Teresa Chapa, PhD, MPA, senior policy advisor, mental health, Office of Minority Health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services;
