The eurozone seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 10% in August 2011, unchanged from July (10.2% in August 2010). In the EU27, unemployment was 9.5% in August 2011, also unchanged from July (9.6% in August 2010).

According to Eurostat estimates, published on 30 September, 22.785 million men and women were unemployed in the EU27 in August 2011, of whom 15.739 million in the eurozone.

Among the member states, the lowest unemployment rates were recorded in Austria (3.7%), the Netherlands (4.4%) and Luxembourg (4.9%), and the highest in Spain (21.2%), Greece (16.7% in the second quarter of 2011) and Latvia (16.2% in the second quarter of 2011).

The largest declines in the jobless rate were observed in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, while the greatest increases were registered in Greece, Bulgaria and Cyprus.
