Schengen Area : No Need to Reinstate Internal Border Control, Says Warsaw

"There is no need to reinstate internal border control in the Schengen area [...]. There are no threats or migration pressures between two Schengen member states, such as Belgium and the Netherlands, for example," said the Polish Minister of the Interior, Jerzy Miller, in the name of the Polish Presidency of the EU, during a meeting at the European Parliament, on 12 October in Brussels.

Indeed, Warsaw hopes to close the debate on the return to controls along internal borders in the case of migration problems - a debate which was opened essentially by France. Rather, it wants to obtain, by the end of its mandate (end of December), results at the Council of Ministers on the reinforcement of the external borders of the Schengen area as well as on the evaluation of the functioning of Schengen rules in the EU.

As well as revising the 2006 Schengen Code and its plan to communitise' decisions on a potential return to internal border controls, in mid-September the European Commission proposed improving the Schengen evaluation instrument. The Commission had already made proposals a year ago, including, for example, surprise visits from experts and service inspections - in order to verify that Schengen rules are properly applied by states. This time, the Commission has proposed measures to help a member state make amendments if necessary. Above all, the mechanism of evaluation would allow the Commission to decide whether to reintroduce border control at some internal borders (either because a member state has requested it, or because a member state has failed to control its external borders). …
