Watchdox: Sharing Documents Securely

Content is being pushed in every direction these days: to mobile, to global, to the cloud, beyond a firewall, or on a platform. Add breaches and security leaks to the mix and controlling that content becomes an even bigger issue.

"People need to share documents more than ever before," says Adi Ruppin, vice president of marketing and business development at WatchDox. "Companies are globalized and people are more mobile." He notes that by 2016, Gartner, Inc. is predicting that there will be 1 billion tablets in use, and the protocol for sharing documents is bound to change drastically too.

"What we're trying to do is basically get some control back from documents, make sure you can share safely, inside the firewall, outside the firewall, on mobile devices, on PCs, on the web, the easy way," says Ruppin. WatchDox and, now, WatchDox SharePoint Connector for SharePoint 2010 take control of documents to ensure that no content is used in an unauthorized manner at any time. "There's a tracking element as well so we can tell exactly where the documents are, if they've been opened, and by whom and when, and we have a nice map where you can see where the document is in real time," he says.

In the old corporate world, a company secured its own documents within its own four walls. With the ubiquitous use of mobile devices and document sharing with partners, the old-time security measures aren't a good fit anymore.

"And if you don't make the process of securing documents easy, people will find ways to circumvent the security, and then you lose all the benefits of having security in the first place," says Ruppin. …
