Soft Skills Are Must-Haves in Future Workplace

Soft skills--such as social intelligence, collaboration, communication, listening, and novel and adaptive thinking--are critical skills that employees will need to find success in the workplace, according to a study by the University of Phoenix Research Institute (see page 19). Have you prepared your employees to thrive in this changing business environment? How do you assess employees for these skills, how do you measure these skills, and how do you train employees to acquire these skills?

As you will read in this month's issue, the workplace is placing new demands on employees. Employees need to be agile to handle major change when it happens, and managers need to better motivate employees to increase productivity, face the challenge of doing more with less, and work more autonomously. And, as Marcus Buckingham asks in the cover article on page 26, "how do we 'out- innovate' the competition?"
