2011's Very*best Learning Organizations: "We Are What We Repeatedly Do; Excellence, Then, Is Not an Act but a Habit."

Article excerpt

Many of the companies recognized with 2011 BEST Awards weathered the economic crisis because they understood the value of their human capital, the importance that learning plays in sustainability, and the significance of a highly engaged workforce.

The 2009 ASTD-i4cp study "Learning in Tough Economic Times" showed that the companies that put a stronger emphasis on learning during the economic crisis had better market performance. Learning departments that spoke the language of business when communicating the value of learning to executives in the organization were able to identify how learning supports the organization's strategic vision.

"Strategic alignment is the key to our success," says Anne Lang, chief human resources officer for BEST Award winner Grant Thornton LLP "Each activity that our team engages in aligns with our firm's strategic drivers, so our efforts focus on what is most important to the business and help drive the desired results. Our business leaders recognize this and give strong and consistent support to investing in the development of our people."

All of the BEST winners' training initiatives focused on increasing productivity, developing new skills, engaging with clients and customers, and taking individual responsibility for learning. This strong commitment to learning has helped many of the winning companies build a culture of integrated talent management, where winning organizations are seeing higher workforce retention rates and support for learning at the highest levels.

"Although we have always had an extremely strong commitment to learning and development and its value proposition, that focus has become more precise during the last five years," says Henry Flores, chief learning officer of BEST Award winner Jiffy Lube International. "We are making a significant effort to become world- class."
