On December 21 the world will enter the final year of the ancient Mayan calendar, once again highlighting predictions that the world will end at the following winter solstice in 2012. While Mexican tourism officials have been capitalizing on those predictions to promote doomsday travel to the country's Mayan ruins, many of our fellow Americans continue to plan for their own rapture.

Although at least two supposed expiration dates (May 21 and, as of press time, October 21) came and went this year with the world still intact, Cincinnati-based fundamentalist preacher Ronald Weinland has already set a new date for the return of Jesus Christ: May 27, 2012. Better safe than sorry, your mom always told you, so why not purchase a "religious power of attorney" and designate someone to keep your affairs in order in the event that the world does actually end?
