This year will be the first time in 10 years that my mother, brother, and I will, gather for Thanksgiving with our spouses and children. We'll be flying to my brother's house back East, our college-age children making the pilgrimage from all over the country. To say my mother is excited is a bit of an understatement. She is so far beyond joyful anticipation, she may just pass out from euphoria when we finally sit down for turkey.

Ten years ago, the last time we were together for Thanksgiving, we felt hollowed out by the sudden death of my father just two months prior. My brother flew in from the other side of the world to be with Mom and me. We were thankful for his presence but sat at the table like three visitors from another planet.
