The closing day of Online Information 2011 in early December signaled the end of an era for many longtime delegates. Perhaps the prevailing blue skies and mild temperatures in London this year were harbingers of the changes forthcoming in 2012. It's anyone's guess.

Next year, delegates will be traveling across London to the International Convention Centre (ICC), Europe's largest convention center, in East London. Incisive Media Investments Ltd., the conference organizers, report that next year's event at ICC ExCel London is part of a big change in concept, format, and technology.

But there was plenty atwitter this year: Delegates mingled among the five tracks (mobile, social media, information professionals, information management, and search and discovery) that channeled trends and technology into conference sessions across a range of topics. Many of the exhibit-floor theaters offered expert-led sessions to standing-room-only crowds.

Social media, mobile, search, and ebooks again topped this year's list of hot topics under the conference theme of Information and Collaboration: Meeting the Challenges of a Mobile Generation. On Day 1, Craig Newmark, founder of craigslist and craigconnects, explained in his opening keynote that he resolved early in his career to give people a voice, and he has succeeded in doing just that. When he worked at Charles Schwab & Co. in 1994, he noticed that people naturally helped each other when they were working on the internet. Armed with this information, he started a basic mailing list of events and happenings in San Francisco the following year, which he named craigslist. …
