JANUARY IS THE MONTH that most of us associate with turning over a new leaf, making plans, reinventing. We can hit that reset button and decide to make over anything, from our bodies to our homes to our outlook on life. At Sunset, we call January our Fresh Starts issue. This month, we've searched the West to find inspiring people learning new things ("Domestic Artists," page 56); trips to invigorate you ("Go Big," page 28); and new ways to cook healthier (our food section that begins on page 84, plus our "Craving Greens" feature on page 62).

It's a fitting time for me to make a fresh start as well. This will be my last issue as the Editor-in-chief of Sunset magazine. For the past decade, I have been at the helm of the most incredible and respected publication in the West, learning along with our readers how to kayak and fly-fish, plant an herb garden, remodel a bathroom, grill a turkey, make gazpacho ... It's been such an unforgettable journey for me.

Many of you have been along for the entire ride, watching changes in the magazine with the gentle skepticism of a trusted friend. …
