Insect Sculpture!

Article excerpt

introduction

Many elementary grade levels study or review insects and life cycles, so I try to collaborate with classroom teachers and make sure I know when the students are learning about insects. I check out many books about insects, and I have a poster I made that shows the parts of insects. I see students once a week for 45 minutes, so I have to make sure I can give information clearly. I show them the books about insects, and we share stories. We talk about the parts of insects and show the differences of arachnids. Then I show them a small sculpture in my art room. We talk about what makes it a sculpture. I show them what the sculpture was made of. I also demonstrate how the artist made the sculpture stay together and not fall apart. At this point I can even point out a particular artist who is famous for sculpture. Picasso is a fun artist to show them as long as you screen the artwork ahead of time. Faberge art is good to introduce, as it shows animals and insects as sculpture and art.

I also make sure they have at least one class in which to draw the insect they are going to make and have the supplies available for them to look through, as the drawing must include a list of supplies they are planning to use and alternatives if the supply runs out. …
