It's finally 2012 and according to our Mayan ancestors and a recent John Cusack disaster movie (and no, I'm not talking about Hot Tub Time Machine), this is it for our planet. The end of the world. Come December 21, that's all she wrote. Really, the only thing left for us to do is figure out the method of our destruction.

We've got plenty of possibilities to consider. We're talking about pandemics, runaway climate change, super-volcanoes, megatsunamis, meteorite impacts or nuclear war. Overpopulation could lead to resource scarcity, drought and famine. Scientific advances in nanotechnology could create robots that become self-replicating killing machines, or artificial intelligence could evolve to the point that machines become smarter than humans and enslave us all. A solar flare could fry the planet or the aliens could finally attack. The list goes on. It's a wonder we've lasted this long.

Our only hope might lie with the handful of groups that have dedicated themselves to studying and preventing these existential risks from becoming reality. …
