Becoming a Real-Life Crime Fighter

In a recent episode of ABC's What Would You Do?, a hidden-camera show that places everyday people in difficult situations to record their reactions, an actor portraying a businessman short on cash for a cup of coffee steals a dollar from a homeless person. Witnesses were shocked. Some people yelled at the "businessman" and reimbursed the homeless man out of their own pockets, while others confronted the executive more directly. One witness went so far as to grab the businessman's arm and force him to not only return the money but apologize to the homeless man for what he had done. Then he actually pulled the would-be thief aside and lectured him about compassion.

It was a bold move that few people would make. Had this been a non-staged situation, it could easily have escalated into a physical altercation. But as far as I was concerned, the most impressive thing about the incident was that our hero was none other than Bill Coffin, the previous editor of this magazine.

As anyone who has met Bill knows, he is a mild-mannered gentleman not predisposed to vigilante behavior. …
