What does a librarian do after retiring from the Library of Congress? If you are DEANNA MARCUM, you simply lead a not-for-profit service, of course.

Marcum, former associate librarian for library services at the Library of Congress, joined Ithaka S+R earlier this year as managing director. In her new role, she will lead this growing notfor-profit service, which provides research and strategic consulting services that help transform scholarship and teaching.

"Our aim is to facilitate the transformation of scholarship and teaching in an online environment," she says. "We identify critical issues facing the communities of higher education, librarianship, and publishing and act as a catalyst for change."

Marcum says her biggest challenge is transitioning from "a very large operational responsibility to a new challenge of thinking about transformational ideas" and "working with a different set of skills."

Her first task will be sharing the company's plans for projects and initiatives that it will undertake during the next 3 years. "I have always had a keen interest in finding ways for the several parts of the education and information communities to work together to define their futures in a digital environment," says Marcum. …
