There Are Always Possibilities

Article excerpt

Mr. Spock, of Star Trek fame, is often quoted, perhaps inaccurately, as having said, "There are always possibilities." Whether the quote is correct or not, it sums up my feelings about the use of technology in the library. When implemented in the best way, technology can open up possibilities for expanded and improved services for library users. Proper implementation is key, however, because technology can also create barriers to service, especially for library users who have special accessibility needs.

Library Accessibility--What You Need to Know

ASCLA (Association of Specialized and Cooperative Library Agencies), a division of ALA, represents specialized library agencies that provide library services and materials for users with special needs. To assist librarians in serving these users, ASCLA has prepared a toolkit series of 15 tip sheets titled "Library Accessibility--What You Need to Know." Each tip sheet discusses a specific concern including assistive technology, volunteers with disabilities, and specific disabilities. The tip sheets were last updated in 2010.

Think Accessible Before You Buy

This additional tip sheet from ASCLA helps librarians evaluate whether electronic resources under consideration for purchase are accessible. It includes a glossary of accessibility terms, internet and web accessibility guidelines, computer software accessibility, and evaluation forms. The document is available in PDF and Word.

'Web Accessibility, Libraries, and the Law'

This article by Camilla Fulton appeared in the March 2011 issue of the Information Technology and Libraries publication from LITA. As more library resources are being made available solely on the web, this paper examines web accessibility and United States federal law, specifically the laws most referenced in web accessibility lawsuits. The author also looked at states with accessibility statutes.
