Philip Allan Literature Guides for GCSE and A' Level are new(ish) rivals to York Notes and Letts Explore etc. and are very good indeed. The examples I saw were Lord of the Flies and The Crucible for GCSE; Hamlet and Frankenstein for A' Level.

Written by teachers and examiners, like any other guide of this type, they help students to understand and use their texts, and to know how to boost grades in their courses and examinations. These also come with extras: free online resources like sample essays, glossary, podcasts etc. Ideal!

Ranging from good (Lord of the Flies) to excellent (The Crucible), Philip Allan guides are set out with the usual useful headings such as: 'Context', 'Plot and Structure' and 'Characterisation' etc. But, they also have a superb 'features' element where 'Key Questions', 'Pause for Thought' and 'Key Quotations' etc. …
