Cumberland Hospital for Children & Adolescents NEW KENT, VA

Cumberland Hospital is nestled on a 98-acre wooded countryside, located on the coast of the Pamunkey River. The 110-bed hospital offers specialized care for children and adolescents with disabilities, injuries, or lifelong illnesses compounded by emotional and/or behavioral problems.

Comprised of 11 buildings, the facility was originally constructed in 1983 and resembled an adult care facility more than a children's hospital. The plain red brick exterior facades and drab interiors lacked curb appeal and were not conducive to healing, nor did they reflect the quality of healthcare provided by the staff and physicians.

The CEO had very specific conditions of satisfaction for the project, including the desire for an outdoorthemed environment that was gender neutral, appropriate for all ages, bright and energetic, and a positive distraction for everyone.

New, covered, porch-like entrances and bright landscaping were added to the building exteriors to declare colorful focal points and break up the monotony of the existing facades.

The main lobby was dramatically transformed into a magical world with oversized flowers hanging above a brightly colored seating vignette and exaggerated lollipop-style trees standing stately behind the white picket fence and colorful brick backdrop. …
