MORE THAN 25 years ago, I landed a job as an entry-level travel editor in the Los Angeles office of Sunset. My boss gave me the keys to a used Honda Civic and a new Thomas Bros.

map guide (yes, it was that long ago), then pushed me out the door with these instructions: Bring back good stories. It was the best job I could imagine.

Until now.

With this issue, I start as the new editor of the magazine. I'm a bit dizzy to be back where I began, after two decades of writing and editing my way through newspapers and magazines, from California to the Midwest to New York. I'm also absolutely humbled. Sunset is hardly just a magazine--it's a way of life. It has always sought to capture what we Westerners love about our part of the universe: the stunning Landscape, the outdoor life, the sense of adventure.

And the spirit of the new. I'm stepping back into a long tradition, yes, but a tradition that has always embraced change. …
