Winter Conference Attendees Enjoy Beautiful Phoenix

At ACA's 2012 Winter Conference, thousands of corrections professionals attended workshops, strolled through the A. exhibit hall and networked with colleagues and friends at the Phoenix Convention Center. Attendees had the opportunity to attend more than 75 workshops on timely topics such as aging offenders, health care, technology, professional development, correctional research, juvenile offenders, mental health and reentry. Valerie Plame Wilson, former CIA operations officer and best-selling author of Fair Game, gave the keynote address at Monday morning's General Session. She shared her thoughts on what she views as abuse of public trust in 2003 when White House and State Department officials revealed her secret CIA status to national journalists. Wilson also spoke about her experience in international security and nuclear proliferation. Also at the General Session, Col. Greg G. Malloy (Florida) was honored posthumously with the Medal of Valor Award. Nyzual Streater (Virginia) received the Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Award, and the New Jersey Department of Corrections received the Innovation in Corrections Award.

On Tuesday, Joseph Wilson, former U.S. ambassador (and Valerie Plame Wilson's husband), recounted his two decades in world political affairs and also addressed the CIA leak controversy at the Annual Luncheon. Afterward, Tonya Meunier and Robbie E. Jones (Virginia) were presented the Award of Merit. In addition, Breaking Down the Bars, a docu-reality series produced by 44 Blue Productions and the Oprah Winfrey Network, and filmed at the Rockville Correctional Facility in Indiana, received the Outstanding Journalism Award. …
