BEA 2012: Beyond Book Basics

Article excerpt

From June 5-7, an estimated 30,000 visitors strolled through the crowded aisles at New York City's Jacob K. Javits Convention Center for BookExpo America (BEA). The expo, which is heralded as one of the largest professional publishing events in North America, has become the prime venue for who's who in the publishing world.

In addition to the 1,300 exhibitors were the Author Stages, BEA Education Program, Digital Discovery Zone (D2Z; digital marketing techniques), Autographing and In-Booth Autographing, Author Breakfasts, and New York Book & Media Week, along with concurrent events with the American Booksellers Association Day of Education and Events and Publishers Launch Conference to BlogWorld & New Media Expo NY and the IDPF Digital Book Conference.

There was even some good news for libraries. The expansion of 3M Library Systems' 3M Cloud Library ebook lending service has changed the playing field through a number of key partnerships. 3M is growing its collection to more than 200,000 titles from 300-plus publishers. The beauty of the 3M Cloud Library is that it provides digital content and in-library hardware, all in one easy-to-use system. …
