ALTHOUGH EMI HAS BEEN SLOW GETTING into the classical DVD market, it has leapt in with style with these two Maria Callas releases. Both the documentary and the two Hamburg concerts have long been available in other formats and much has already been written about them. Suffice it to say that, even with some strained top notes by Callas, the musical and historical value of these documents cannot be overestimated. One of the major advantages of this new DVD release over previous in English, French or German.

Maria Callas: Life and Art is a quite moving account of the late soprano's life and career. In addition to interviews with the likes of director/designer Franco Zeffirelli, conductor Carlo Maria Giulini and tenor Giuseppe di Stefano, there are interviews with La Divina herself, as well as film footage of several of her concert and stage performances. …
