LAST MONTH AT UBTECH 2012 IN LAS VEGAS, I HAD the opportunity to speak with a consultant who designed lecture capture installations for colleges and universities. We spoke at length about how consultants work with institutions and how the relationship could be improved.

At one point in our conversation, I asked him what he wished his clients would think about before engaging his services.

Without hesitation, he said he wished his clients would think more about the big picture, the overall nature of their relationship and what they hoped to accomplish.

Too often, he said, stakeholders view a consultant as someone who comes on board briefly to fix a particular problem and then moves on, while the rest of the institution carries on as usual. But to truly be effective, the consultant's solution has to play an integral role in the overall operation.
