Reportlinker.com Simplifies Search

Article excerpt

Here's an innovative company that makes searching for statistics and enterprise data easy, efficient, and effective.

FOUNDER

Reportlinker.com is a search engine that provides access to reports on industry sectors, companies, and countries, as well as market statistics for both public and private entities. Co-founders Benjamin Carpano, now CEO, and Nicolas Bombourg, vice president of sales, came up with the idea in 2007.

Carpano, who worked as a strategy advisor/consultant at Ernst & Young, recognized the value of having a massive knowledgebase of data from different sources. "At Ernst & Young, we had a huge knowledge center with data built from different sources. I was really impressed, when I worked there, by the quality and the diversity and how deep this offering was," he says. "Each time we were working on a specific industry, we were able to find data for it." Carpano and Bombourg wanted their company to build something similar to provide critical information services.

STARTUP FACTS

The Reportlinker.com team spent 2 years in the R&D phase before taking the company live. Carpano says the company's intended customer base also began to shift during that initial development phase in 2005 and 2006. "We quickly identified what we built was not only of interest to small companies, but for big companies too," he says.

Through Reportlinker.com, users can access more than 1 million reports that are published by a wide range of sources, including newspapers, governments, and investment agencies.

COOL TECHNOLOGY

Carpano says the main goal of Reportlinker.com's search engine technology was to keep it simple for users. "You can access any of our content with one search window," he says. "We wanted to have a mass market approach. The idea was to have something simple with a single search window and [enable] customers to pull our content from just one search."

Reportlinker.com helps users work more productively through faceted search. For instance, Carpano says that if a user is searching for wind power, Reportlinker.com will suggest (on the left side of the screen) a variety of options for different industries, countries, or types of data where the user can search for more granular results. "We help you to refine the search" as you go along, he says.

Reportlinker.com processes 5 million pages of content daily. "We have a big data center with all those servers that process those pages every day," says Carpano. …
