WHEN SEPTEMBER COMES ROUND, summer always starts tugging at my mental sleeve. The season is winding down, officially ending on the 21st but practically ending by Labor Day Monday, when kids are back to school, the days have shortened, and the air has cooled even as the sun continues to shine. Tug, tugging: Did I go to the beach enough? Did I picnic enough? Did I hike enough, grill out enough, swim enough? Or have I let the season slip by? I'm sure Pm not the only one who feels summer moves on too fast.

But there's hope: There's still time. That's the opportunity of September.

I was recently driving west along State 46, the winding highway that crosses San Luis Obispo County in Central California. Suddenly the hills opened up and there below was the Pacific, shimmering gray-blue. It was like summer just up and smacked me on the head.
