Design Star: Jill Wenger Put Seattle on the Fashion Map and Now She's Doing the Same for Design

Article excerpt

TO WALK THROUGH design emporium Totokaelo is to see the world through the tasteful eyes of its owner, Jill Wenger. When she launched her online boutique in 2008, Seattle suddenly became known for more than the Singles-era grunge look. This past May, Jill opened an airy 7,000-square-foot location of Totokaelo (its name from a Latin phrase loosely meaning "reaching for the stars") in the Capitol Hill neighborhood. The store sells one-of-a-kind art and objects seamlessly mixed with clothing from avant-garde fashion designers; you might see stools hand-carved from salvaged walnut alongside leather jackets from Rick Owens. "Totokaelo is more than a job for me," she says. "It's the way I experience my life."
