Three articles in this issue will be of special interest to readers who weren't able to attend the 2012 ^1 USITT Conference & Stage Expo: the keynote address by Luis Valdez, a recap of the events, people, and products in Stage Expo, and a catalog of the top sixteen designers in Design Expo. Talented designers are also highlighted in a short piece about the winners of the KCACTF design awards. And three more articles in this issue will have particular appeal to theatre technicians.

Luis Valdez is the spark that ignited the farm workers theatre, El Teatro Campesino, in the mid1960s in California. He is also an influential and important playwright, director, and teacher. His lively keynote address to a packed auditorium in Long Beach, California, was inspiring. The USITT Stage Expo is always fun and informative. And it has been bigger and better every year thanks to the expertise and dedication of Stage Expo Sales Manager Helen Willard. The comments in her article from many of this year's exhibitors highlight how successful Stage Expo has become. Design Expo is a chance for members to present their best work to thousands of their peers at the conference. Douglas Gilpin, chair of the Design Expo Committee, introduces to an even bigger audience of TD&T readers sixteen of these designers selected by the panel of distinguished judges as representing the best in the show.
