Church Backs Native Family in Bid for Public Inquiry

The Anglican Church is supporting the family of a Native protester killed in a confrontation with Ontario Provincial Police last year.

Rev. Laverne Jacobs, Native ministries co-ordinator of the n a t i o n a l church, appeared at a recent press conference here and backed the family of Anthony (Dudley) George in calling for a public inquiry into the shooting.

Mr. George was shot and killed the evening of Sept. 6, 1995, in a confrontation between Native people and the OPP riot squad. The shooting took place near Ipperwash provincial park, which the Native people say contains a burial ground.

Mr. Jacobs said he appeared at the emotional news conference to show solidarity with the George family.

"I quoted Christ's statement that `Greater love has no man than this, that a man should lay down his life for his friends."' said Mr. Jacobs. "Dudley laid down his life for the people and the land that he loved and this action was based on his belief and commitment for aboriginal rights and land claims . …
