One of our proudest achievements last year was the inauguration of the Opera Canada Awards--named "The Rubies" to commemorate the magazine's founding editor, Ruby Mercer. Our intention was to establish the Rubies as an annual celebration, and with this issue, we're happy to announce the recipients of the 2001 awards.

This year, we changed the selection process by convening a national committee, on which I represented the magazine. We are grateful for the enthusiastic support and input from the committee, which included: Richard Bradshaw, general director of the Canadian Opera Company; Tyrone Paterson, general director of Opera Lyra Ottawa; Bernard Labadie, artistic and music director of Les Violons du Roy/l'Opera de Quebec; and Michael Cavanagh, artistic director of Edmonton Opera. It proved difficult to get everyone together by telephone, though thanks to the speed and efficiency of e-mail, we happily reached a consensus on the recipients of this year's awards.

The Opera Canada Award in the Opera Builder category goes to Irving Guttman, especially recognizing his tireless championing of the development of opera across western Canada. Dr. Guttman was the founding artistic director of the Vancouver, Edmonton and Manitoba opera companies, and of Opera Saskatchewan, where he is currently artistic director. Besides serving as artistic consultant to Calgary Opera, he also continues to play a vital role in Canadian opera as an active stage director, coach, mentor, advisor and teacher. Initially nominated for the award by the leadership of all five major western companies, everyone on our selection committee readily agreed. "There is just no question about Irving Guttman's enormous impact on building opera in western Canada," said Tyrone Paterson. "If we're talking about building companies and support in the community," added Bernard Labadie, "Irving should win right away. …
