Around the Branches (Canadian Institute of International Affairs)
The variety of subjects addressed by our members this year was admirable. A few of the speakers who have been providing information for debate and discussion include:
In Saskatoon, Dr. Hans Michelmann, editor of the Journal of European Integration and professor of political studies at the University of Saskatchewan, spoke about `Europe on the Eve of the 21st Century.' Also, Dr. John Foster, an accomplished professional in policy development and international relations, gave members a briefing entitled `APEC Markets and Human Rights: The View from Vancouver' soon after returning from the highly publicised APEC conference in November 1997. Professor Peter St. John, an expert on insurgency and terrorism, has been speaking to our members about the situation in Algeria. The St. John and Thunder Bay branches were both presented with excellent lectures in December 1997.
Professor Heribert Adam spoke to the Victoria Branch on `Comrades in Business - The New Elite in South Africa'; Ivan Head shared `Some Reflections on the Commonwealth'; Arthur Wright, former ADM at CIDA, spoke on the eve of the APEC meeting in Vancouver on the role and scope of APEC; and Professor Larry Black discussed `The Eastern Movement of NATO.'
Ludmilla Selezneva, professor of history at Rostov State University in Russia, (see picture) traveled to four branches (Hamilton, Montreal, National Capital and, Toronto). The professor gave our members a well-rounded lecture on Russia's past, present and future. Our special thanks to National Branch member Dr. George Albert, who initiated Professor Selezneva's visit to Canada.
This year's recipients of the Montreal Branch's scholarship program are students Ms. Heather Sokoloff, Mr. Richard Meloff and Ms. Gina Bento. As part of their scholarship we welcome them as new members to the Institute.
Professor Shreesh Juyal of the University of Regina, Chair of the CIIA's South Saskatchewan branch, has been invited to deliver the prestigious Lester Pearson Lecture at the University of Delhi's Centre for Canadian Studies, this April 23. …
