Group Pledges High-Tech Funds: Project Links Churches on Web

The American Bible Society is giving backing of $5 million to a project intended to link every church in North America to the World Wide Web.

The project - called HOW (Houses of Worship)-aims to enlist every church in the United States and Canada, estimated at more than 300,000, but those in charge of the project expect to be offering the opportunity worldwide by the year 2000. Churches which sign up will be offered four free pages on the HOW web site (http://www.housesofworship.net).

Through the Internet and the World Wide Web, project initiators believe churches can better connect with their members, with each other and with the communities they wish to serve. The $5 million support from the society is for an initial period, which is to extend until this summer.

Robert Thibadeau, a Presbyterian layman who is a computer specialist and chief technical architect of HOW, told ENI: "There is no better way to reach communities. …
