EVEN AFTER ALL MY YEARS MAKING MAGAZINES, I've never quite gotten used to being out of sync with the actual calendar. My staff and I spend our summers putting together stories all about fall--pumpkins, gold-turning aspens, Halloween--and by the time October 31 really arrives, I feel I've already been to the spooky party, weeks before, at least in the pages of our magazine. This past summer, I chowed down in the Sunset test kitchen as Amy Machnak, our recipe editor, played with variations on pumpkin pie (page 56). When the true season arrives, I know I'll go through major pie deja vu.

Some things, of course, you can't conjure up in a kitchen. There's a narrow window in the West, just a few weeks, when our aspens and cottonwoods blaze with gold. Sunset photographer Tom Story caught the show last year in Bridgeport, California. He was planning ahead in 2011 for fall 2012, and when you land on his photo in this issue (page 25), you'll feel instantly pulled into the fleeting autumn season. …
