Social media has become such a part of everyday life that it's de rigueur to send a tweet or post on Facebook to inform your world about the latest details. But those who want to share comments and remain anonymous also have options with reddit and Whisper.

reddit, founded by two University of Virginia graduates in 2005, started with 20 employees. Within 1 year, Conde Nast stepped in and purchased reddit for about $20 million and has intentionally left the site alone. In September 2012, internet scorekeeper Alexa.com ranked the site 64th in the U.S.

reddit bills itself as "The Front Page of the Internet," and news items (true or not) tend to appear on the site first, with some humor, some off-color, and some just plain quirky stories. Recently, President Barack Obama joined reddit for an AMA (aka "ask me anything") and fielded questions ranging from basketball to regulations to internet concerns. Even the story about the alleged theft of Mitt Romney's tax returns broke on reddit before hitting the mainstream media.

reddit's demographics are predominately male, ages 18-24, with some college education, according to Alexa. …
