Anne Cassidy has been a successful and prolific writer of teenage fiction for 20 years and it is good to see an ex English teacher make her mark in such a competitive market. With Dead Time she maintains the high quality of her previous work through her usual commitment to an exceptionally strong narrative linked to the development of a range of interesting characters, all of whom could easily blossom into the focal point of the novel. We encounter the strangely detached grandmother, the liberal police officer who runs a youth club, the ex-police officer with mysterious links to the central characters, the geeky flat-mate and a myriad of quirky students who populate the scenes at the 6th form college where much of the action takes place.

However, the central character is Rose--a not particularly likeable misfit at the college--whose own hinterland involves a disappearing mother, an unnaturally intense relationship with a stepbrother with whom she has just reconnected and a capacity to upset most people that she encounters. …
