I do sometimes wonder if there is anything new under the sun in terms of educational texts. The official blurb for this new book, subtitled Activities for the Primary Classroom, is as follows: 'Bringing a fresh and lively approach to language study, Learning about Language is an exciting collection of fun, creative activities and warm-up games that explore the multifaceted nature of the English language.'

I have heard this, or something very similar, many times before since the 1970s and so I was not expecting much to be honest. However, I found this to be a surprisingly interesting and useful book! The main useful feature is the fact that the book covers everything you might want to know in alphabetical order. A is for alliteration, I is for idioms, S is for synonyms and so on, with more than 50 different sections. I even learnt the word 'borrowings' that I had never come across before. This apparently is the official term for words in our language that originate from other languages, like 'bungalow' for example. …
