The first of a new series about Mattie's funny family promises well for the series. Mattie, whose full name is Matisse, is nine years old and a rather anxious girl. Her father teaches art and is also a sculptor, so some of her brothers and sisters and the dog are named after artists. We have the dog Jellico (Michelangelo), and Dontie (Donatello). The book is lively and full of fun but this joke is for the grown-ups. The household and garden are disorganised but the Butterfield family has a strong sense of family unity and pull together when menaced. The action is set at school and in the immediate neighbourhood. Nothing very much happens: Mattie learns to grow plants from seeds and all the children of the family dig and plant a vegetable garden to sell produce and supply their own needs. …
