NWEC Zambia: NWEC Power Company Is a Dynamic Venture and Heralded as the First Major Private Electricity Distribution Company in Zambia, Andrew Kamanga Spoke to Darren Moore about the Origins of the Company, Its Current Status and Future Plans for Growth and Expansion

The initial premise of the NWEC was to take advantage of the electricity sector structural reforms and streamline the energy needs of the large-scale mining companies in Zambia who traditionally had bulky departments that would manage their electricity infrastructure.

The innovative solution offered by NWEC was to get private parties to build, own, and operate the entire infrastructure, while also buying electricity in bulk from the national supplier, thereby allowing mines to concentrate on their core mining operations, while having their non-mining electricity needs met to the stringent standards the mine also demands.

NWEC has since 2008 secured a 15-year bulk supply power agreement with ZESCO (the national power company) to secure power supply to be distributed in the Lumwana mine township, commercial and light industrial area. In addition to this the unique company is the first of its kind in Zambia having been been granted a concession to design, finance and build critical electricity infrastructure in the same Lumwana mine area.

Working in tandem with one of the largest mining companies in Zambia--First Quantum Minerals, which is expanding its mining activities in the North Western Province of Zambia--has presented expansion opportunities for NWEC to replicate the Lumwana model. NWEC is rapidly seeking and identifying electricity distribution projects in Solwezi at the Kabitaka housing development and the Kalumbila housing development at trident mine.

NWEC offers an innovative solution to the current electricity supply distribution channels by entering into long-term partnerships with high-energy consumption mining clients to supply non-mining electricity load to the township, commercial and light industrial areas within the mine area. …
