NEW YORK -- Interactive Data Corp., the information services subsidiary of Chase Manhattan Bank NA, introduced on Tuesday what it describes as the first "true" micro-to-mainframe computer product -- a software program for screening corporate financial and stock market data.

PC Screen, as the system is called, works only with IBM PCs and compatible computers, such as the Compaq and Eagle. It relies on the Lotus 1-2-3 integrated software. And users must be subscribers to Compustat, the Standard & Poor's Corp. data base of information on 6,000 corporations.

The microcomputer at a bank or other financial institution connects through IDC's own phone network with its mainframe computers in Waltham, Mass. PC Screen then instantanly isolates the companies in the Compustat and IDC data bases as the analyst sets criteria.

Demonstrating PC Screen at a news conference here, J. Phillip Cooper, senior vice president and general manager of the IDC securities products division, said a true micro-to-mainframe system must be "architected" from the ground up and not merely enable the user to download and upload data.

The IDC announcement described PC Screen as so simple that someone who has never operated a computer can get results.

"PC Screen was designed to eliminate the arcane commands, extensive logic statements, and time-consuming data searches that often force financial analysts to rely on computer experts to perform their screening analyses for them," IDC said in the announcement. …
