Top Women Executives in Advertising & Marketing

Article excerpt

FROM COSMETICS AND CARS TO TECHNOLOGY AND TELECOMMUNICATIONS, SOME of the world's most valued brands are being driven by female image-makers. In today's hypercompetitive era, these women--charged with consumer engagement, product positioning, and brand-moving strategies--are making a huge difference in the top and bottom lines of global business.

The stakes couldn't be higher. Across digital, print, broadcast, and outdoor media platforms, U.S. advertising spend in the third quarter of 2012 grew 7.1% from a year ago, generating revenues of $34.5 billion, according to data released by Kantar Media, provider of strategic advertising and marketing information. Total expenditures for the first nine months increased 3.8% to $101.3 billion, with a large part of the growth attributed to dollars spent on the London Summer Olympics and political campaigns.

That's why the editors of BLACK ENTEPRISE have identified the Top Women Executives in Advertising & Marketing. BE initiated a comprehensive search, contacting, among other sources, the nation's leading 100 advertisers, the top 100 global marketers, general market advertising firms, and BE 100s advertising agencies. On the agency side, we included CEOs, creative directors, and other senior executives who manage major lines of business and significantly contribute to that firm's revenues and/or billings, or lead creative direction and execution. Corporate executives on the list hold senior positions including but not limited to CMO, EVE, and SVP, as well as directors and managers in marketing and advertising within the parent company or key operating units. All make considerable contributions to their company's revenues and significantly advance corporate or product branding strategies. Our editors did not include executives associated with nonprofit organizations, sports leagues, or public relations firms on this list. We also excluded general counsels, chief diversity officers, human resources officers, or senior managers who oversee media relations, public affairs, investor relations, community development, and government affairs. All executives on this listing held their positions as of Dec. 31, 2012.

Kim Adams House

Head of Jeep Advertising, Chrysler Group L.L.C.

House has been one of the masterminds behind the successful general market and multicultural campaigns for the Jeep brand over the past three years, serving as point person on the new vehicle launch of the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Jeep's 2012 "Power Within" marketing and advertising campaign with USA Basketball. Due largely to her efforts, between 2009 and 2012, Jeep brand sales have increased 105%. Additionally, for 2012, the Jeep brand set an all time global sales record. Since joining the Chrysler Group in 1999, she has never been afraid to push the envelope. "Some of the greatest successes that I've earned in my career have been founded in trusting my instincts and simply knowing what is best for my product, my brand, ultimately my company," she says.

Valerie Barker Waller

Director, Brand Marketing Communications, United Airlines

Oversight of advertising, digital marketing communications, and sponsorships for United Airlines is the latest role in Barker Waller's stellar career. She joined the world's largest airline in 2010 after leading marketing efforts for Chicago 2016--the organization that handled the Windy City's bid for the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games. During an earlier stint at advertising agency Leo Burner as an account manager, she helped launch major campaigns for Kellogg's Rice Krispies Treats, which at the time was hailed as one of the most successful new product launches for Kellogg's. Although positions throughout her career have varied, she has maintained a consistent business approach. "You're always talking to a consumer," says 47-year-old Barker Waller. "It's all about understanding that person and what will motivate them. …
