Pittsburgh's Dollar Bank Installs Braille ATM Keys to Serve Blind Customers

Article excerpt

PITTSBURGH -- The $1.58 billion-asset Dollar Bank has completed installation of Braille keys on more than 20 automated teller machines scattered among its 26 branches. It is the first bank in Pittsburgh and one of a growing number of banks across the country to adapt their terminals to accommodate blind customers.

According to Elizabeth M. Davis, spokeswoman for Dollar, which is a member of the MAC automated teller machine network, the bank worked with the Pittsburgh School for the Blind in developing the program.

"They think it's a great idea, a great breakthrough," she said. "We've had a lot of positive feedback from the community. Sighted people noticed it and said, "That's really great!'"

The bank also provides Braille statements.

The $100 ATM adapter kit, available from Diebold Inc., Canton, Ohio, since mid-1982, consists of a set of Braille keys representing the full range of transactions and numbers; sample instruction manuals in large type and Braille that each bank may revise as necessary to explain its own system; and a videotape developed with the Cleveland Society for the Blind that is used to train bank personnel to serve as ATM instructors for the blind. Braille instruction cards and standard audio beeps also assist in the operation.

The Braille keys do not affect ATM use by sighted customers.

"Visually impaired and blind customers can read the pamphlet, and they also have manual assistance in the training phase. The package is ideal," Ms. Davis said, noting that some blind customers have been able to memorize the system with only one review by a bank officer. …
