With the death of Eric Ericson the world has lost a giant of choral training and discipline. Ericson's effectively 'new' view of choral sound had a huge impact on performance practice in Scandinavia and beyond.

He was born in Boras in south-eastern Sweden and studied in Stockholm and Basel. He was soon prompted to found his own ensembles, and while still a student in 1945 he established the Stockholm Chamber Choir, renamed the Eric Ericson Chamber Choir in 1988. He was also strongly associated with the Swedish Radio Choir which he re-founded in 1951, serving as its principal conductor until 1982. He worked with numerous international ensembles including the Netherlands Chamber Choir, the BBC Singers and Accentus.

Had a profession been printed on Ericson's passport, it would surely have read 'choir trainer rather than 'conductor'. His conducting technique was spare and focused in the extreme, increasingly so in old age. …
