Opening the Doors of Educational Opportunity

For us Phi Kappa Phi members, the love of learning not only rules humanity, as our motto essentially goes, but also opens "the doors of opportunity to all of God's children," as Martin Luther King, Jr., put it in his "I Have a Dream" speech at the March on Washington in August 1963. These photographs I took in June 2010 capture this dual imperative: San Diego State University students perform international service learning for the Mnyakongo Primary School in Kongwa, Tanzania, an impoverished village of less than 12,000 people. A 2011 Phi Kappa Phi Literacy Grant and the SDSU chapter underwrote part of this multi-phased initiative, now in its third year. Outreach so far includes building a school library and stocking it with more than 7,000 books in English and 1,500 in Swahili; helping secure electricity and running water for the campus; and buying goats to provide milk for the school lunch program. …
