Matthew Langshur was born in 1998 without a left heart ventricle. His father, Canadian entrepreneur Eric Langshur, created a website so family members and friends could get updates on Matthew's condition. Realizing that other hospital patients would benefit from having similar sites of their own, Eric and his wife, Sharon, created CarePages.com (formerly TLContact, Inc.) in 2000.

"Starting CarePages was fantastic," Eric told a reporter for Technori.com. "I had the great fortune of finding my passion, with a business and a product that I had such a belief in. I knew it was important work, and that was the fueling function for the huge amount of effort that was required to make it come into existence."

CarePages lets you create a free website to share information and build an online support network during a pregnancy, illness, or other health challenge. Family and friends who visit the site can post messages of support and encouragement.

CarePages also offers its services to hospitals, through private-labeled CarePages websites, which are available from more than 625 healthcare facilities in Canada and the U.S.

Creating a CarePages Site

The Langshurs sold CarePages in 2007 to Revolution Health, a portal started by AOL co-founder Steve Case. In 2008, the Revolution websites were absorbed into Everyday Health Network. Today, CarePages is an Everyday Health Media, LLC property that gets more than 1 million unique visitors a month.

Personalized CarePages websites usually are created by hospital patients' family members or close friends who serve as site managers and co-managers. Starting a personalized site is quick and easy because CarePages provides a template that includes such sections as Update, About, Patient Details, Photo Gallery, and Visiting and Contact Information.
