Elementary Composition

Winner: Eric Ho, Southwest Division (California); Su-Shing Chiu, teacher

Eric Ho is a third-grade student at Myford Elementary School in Irvine, California. He has been a student at the Irvine Yamaha Music Center in California since age 4. He currently attends Yamaha's JSAC, studying piano and composition with Su-Shing Chiu. Eric plays both the violin and piano and has won several awards from Musical Arts Club of OC, MTAC and Cypress College Piano Competition, as well as the MTAC Composers Today 2012 State Contest.

Junior Composition

Winner: Karalyn Schubring, Southwest Division (Arizona); Tomoko Yonemaru, teacher

Karalyn Schubring, 13, is a ninth-grade student at Chandler Preparatory Academy. She has studied piano at the East Valley Yamaha Music School for nine years. Karalyn has received several awards for her compositions in the past, and she also performed Story of the Stars at Yamaha's 2011 National Canadian Junior Original Composition concert. In addition to composing and improvising on the piano, she enjoys improvisational acting and anything else creative, especially drawing.

Senior Composition

Winner: Ashlin Hunter, South Central Division (Oklahoma); Krystal Hennessey, NCTM, teacher

Ashlin Hunter is a composer, pianist and flutist from Stillwater, Oklahoma. Her previous compositions have received awards in OMTA and MTNA composition contests. Ashlin serves as drum major for the Stillwater High School Marching Band and plays piccolo in the SHS Wind Ensemble. She is a two year OMEA All-State flutist. Ashlin studies composition with Igor Karaca, flute with Mary Fukushima-Kirkendoll and piano with Krystal Hennessey. In addition to music, Ashlin enjoys yoga, cats and poetry.

Young Artist Composition


Winner: Jon Ginder, West Central Division (Missouri); Warren Gooch, teacher

Jon Ginder began studying violin with Agatha French when he was age 12. Soon after, he began to write his own music. Since then, Jon has written music for a variety of ensembles including string orchestra, symphonic orchestra and many chamber ensembles. Jon is a senior at Truman State University, where he is majoring in mathematics and music.

MTNA Junior Piano Competition

Winner: Nathan Lee, Northwest Division (Washington); Sasha Starcevich, teacher

Nathan Lee began playing piano at age 6 and studies with Sasha Starcevich. Nathan has performed with the Seattle Symphony at Benaroya Hall, Coeur d'Alene Symphony and Perugia Festival Orchestra in 2012. He has performed as a featured artist on Classical KING FM's NW Focus Live program; as a recitalist and soloist at Music Fest Perugia in Italy in 2011 and 2012; and won the 2011 KING FM Ten Grands Artist Award.
