CANADIAN DIMENSION BEGAN publication in the 1960s as a left-nationalist magazine. Its major preoccupation was Canada's subordination to the United States. In this light it strongly identified with movements in the undeveloped world, Marxist and radical nationalist, struggling to liberate themselves from Western/American imperialism. Its pages in this period especially expressed solidarity with the Cuban and Vietnamese Revolutions. Overall its perspective, infused with Marxism, was well to the left of mainstream Canadian opinion, including that emanating from the NDP. There have been many ups and downs since. Born of the enthusiastic revolutionary spirit of the 1960s the magazine had trouble responding to the renewed offensive of imperialism that marked the neoliberal years from the 1980s through the first decade of the new century. The demolition of many of the Third World revolutionary regimes and the Soviet Union could not help but cause serf-questioning.

Here it is important to point to the guiding hand of Cy Gonick, especially his recognition that within Canada there has developed an aboriginal insurgency against colonialism and imperialism that complicates the original vision of the magazine. On the other hand, his stubborn commitment to the Marxism which he had imbibed as a graduate student at the University of California (Berkeley) served the perspective of the magazine well. It proved the starting point of the analysis that the magazine offered of the crisis of the 1960s that in retrospect has stood the test of time. Likewise it served as the foundation of the ongoing analysis offered by the magazine of the neoliberal capitalist and imperialist offensive of the succeeding period. The benefit of such an enduring perspective has been confirmed by the crisis of world capitalism that set in after 2008, which opens new vistas for the future of Canada. …
