This is the time of year when you stop working, relax, switch off and recharge - you hope. It is a time when you get reacquainted with family members you perhaps haven't spent enough time with over previous months Although it might be tempting for some, and made possible by new mobile technology, never stopping work must be bad for your health. But at least some business people know how addicted to work they can be. As Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary recently told MT: 'Holidays are a complete waste of time.'

Where did it come from? Paid holiday is one of the triumphs of the trade union movement. Leisure had once been an option only for the ... leisured classes. You got Sundays off, perhaps, because it was the Lord's day. But first in agriculture and then in industry, work was hard and unrelenting. And holiday was a pretty exotic concept.
