The Real Lake Tahoe: Where to Hike, What to Eat, and How to Find a Quiet Stretch of Sand on Big Blue

Article excerpt

Three lakeside locals show you how to go deeper into Tahoe this summer.

BEST SKI RESORT IN SUMMER

Squaw Valley

1960 SQUAW VALLEY RD., OLYMPIC VALLEY

KAILI SANCHEZ: We pretty much live at Squaw Valley during the summer. PATTY BAIRD: I like that you can see the mountains from the village there--they peek in through the buildings, so it gives you some sense of the magnitude of the surrounding granite. KS: My favorite summer day there is to go up Shirley Canyon. There's lots of little spots to dip into the stream, plus wide-open granite rock areas for picnics. If you hike to the top, you can use the pool or the hot tub, and you can always take the aerial tram down. That's fun. Shirley Canyon trailhead at end of Squaw Peak Rd.; squaw.com.

SECRET BEACHES

Baldwin Beach

STATE 89, 4 MILES NORTHWEST OF SOUTH LAKE TAHOE

SEAN SWEENEY: We've got three great beaches in a row--Pope, Camp Richardson, and Baldwin, which is my favorite. It's wide and golden, with a little river inlet where kids catch frogs and catfish. On the opposite side is what locals call Ski Beach. If you live in South Shore and have a boat, this is where you hang out.1.usa.gov/11KY1yg. KS: On the Nevada side, you can't get more secret than Hidden Beach (shown on page 15). Probably a quarter-mile wide: supersoft white sand with the clearest water that takes the color of the sky--and these huge boulders crowding the shoreline. Park at intersection of Lakeshore Blvd. and State 28 in Incline Village and follow trail.

HOMETOWN FAVORITE

Truckee Thursdays

DOWNTOWN TRUCKEE

PB: Every Thursday in summer stores stay open late and they close the main drag to traffic to do a street fair that's also a farmers' market. KS: Absolutely everybody goes! There are food tents, a beer-and-wine garden, local artists selling their stuff. My favorite booth is Bluebird Designs. The owner is a longtime local. She makes rings, necklaces. Her pieces are one-of-a-kind. People in Tahoe don't dress up a lot, so it's nice to have something that lets your personality shine through. truckeethursdays.com; bluebirddesigns.com.

BEST BIG BREAKFASTS

Fire Sign Cafe

1785 W. LAKE BLVD., WEST SHORE

PB: A little funky building right on Highway 89. My husband always has eggs Benedict, but I order the Joe's Special. If you're one for hearty, beefy scrambles--with spinach, mushrooms, and onion--you can't beat it. KS: Their homemade muffins are good too, baked with fresh berries in summer. $; firesigncafe.com. SS: Off the beaten path a little ways, in the town of Meyers, is the Meyers Downtown Cafe. …
