Transforming Leaders: A Premier Health and Well-Being Company Offers a Transformational Leadership Development Experience to High-Potential Leaders

The following story was told by Debra Gmelin, corporate director of the Leadership Institute at Humana, and Eric Mankin, senior editor, global delivery, Harvard Business Publishing.

CLIENT

OPPORTUNITY

The organization wanted to equip a broad group of leaders with new approaches to lead a strategic transformation that would overcome the general loss of trust in the U.S. healthcare environment.

DIAGNOSIS

Harvard Business Publishing conducted an extensive needs assessment of various stakeholders, from an internal line of business executives to Medicare agents and trade associations. The resulting program design would address three broad categories:

* Humana-focused: Improve organization, direction, and leadership capabilities.

* Customer-focused: Cultivate more valuable relationships with customers and partners.

* Externally focused: Develop a more comprehensive understanding of healthcare reform and its implications for the company.

METHODS

Humana's Leadership Institute partnered with Harvard Business Publishing to design, develop, and execute the resulting Health Care Leaders 2020, an immersive 16-month program for a cohort of 40 of its high-potential executive leaders.

The program was divided into five learning areas, or modules:

* healthcare--an industry in transition

* creating a vision for the future

* finding innovative solutions

* transformational leadership

* driving change.

Each module was comprised of a 2.5-day, in-person learning event, combined with virtual events such as moderated webinars, expert lectures, and discussion boards. …
