The Serpentine Sackler Gallery, the 900sqm extension venue just over the Serpentine Bridge from the 43-year-old main gallery, is to open on 28 September with an exhibition by Argentine artist Adrian Villar Rojas. The former gunpowder store, built in 1805, has been refurbished and extended by Zaha Hadid, the architect's first permanent structure in her adopted home city. www.serpentinegallery.org

Focal Point Gallery in Southend reopens in its new building on 30 September. Long housed in Southend's Central Library, the gallery is moving with the library to its new [pounds sterling]27m home, The Forum in Elmer Square. Whitworth Art Gallery, part of the University of Manchester, has closed while it completes its extension and redevelopment works. The [pounds sterling]15m project, led by MUMA architects and due for completion in summer 2014, will double the venue's public space while also reconnecting the gallery to the adjacent Whitworth Park. www.whitworth.manchester.ac.uk

Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, part of the University of East Anglia in Norwich, completes its redevelopment works this month as part of UAE's 50th-anniversary celebrations. New gallery spaces open to the public on 14 September with an exhibition of historical works from East Anglia. www.scva.ac.uk
